My Big Album Review Strikes Again. Mates of State: Re-Arrange Us

Mates of State---Kori Gardner (keyboard/vocals) and Jason Hammel (drums/vocals)---have a very specific formula: fractured boy/girl harmonies sprinkled over sweet and playful indie pop.
On their latest release Re-arrange Us [buy], the husband and wife duo stick with that formula and it works---once again. Enjoy.

Vaselines Reunite @ Scotland's Tigerfest

[Via nme.com]:
The Vaselines performed a reunion gig last night (May 16) at Tigerfest in Dunfermline.

Supporting Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub, the band arrived on stage at 7.45 at the town’s Carnegie Hall to a small but enthusiastic crowd before launching straight into ‘Son Of A Gun’ - one of three tracks that were once covered by Nirvana.

"This is our first all seated gig," joked singer Eugene Kelly. "It’s all a bit grown up, not very punk rock is it?"

The band, who were also joined by members of Belle & Sebastian, then blasted through a set full of crowd-pleasing favourites that included 'Molly’s Lips' and 'Sex Sux (Amen)'.

The biggest cheer of the night was reserved for 'Jesus Doesn’t Want Me For A Sunbeam', which Kelly introduced by saying: "We write songs about shagging and baby Jesus, this one is about baby Jesus."

It was evident that the duo had not played together for over a decade when Frances McKee slipped up on 'You Think You’re A Man', as she continued playing while the rest of the band were finishing, prompting them to continue for an extra chorus.

They ended their 30 minute set with 'Dying For It' before Kelly thanked the crowd for coming. He added: "Thank you very much for coming and not spitting at us."

The Vaselines will play the 20th anniversary of Sub Pop records in Seattle on July 12-13.

My Big Interview Strikes Again. Leo Maymind (Spanish Prisoners)

Leo Maymind from Brooklyn's Spanish Prisoners
discusses The Klezmatics, Morrissey
and the joys and pains of home recording.
Q: How would you describe Spanish Prisoners' sound to someone who has never heard your music?
A: I would describe it like this: it's like walking down the street in an unfamiliar city with a group of old friends, slightly buzzed on red wine on a windy night when a familiar melody, maybe from a tenor saxophone, drifts over from the next avenue...scattered, familiar, torn, comforting, a number of feelings and colors and moods.

Q: What bands do you think most influence the sound of Spanish Prisoners?
A: Tapes from my mother's collection that I listened to and somehow became ingrained in my memory: Swordfish Trombones- Tom Waits, The Joshua Tree- U2, Highway 61 Revisited- Bob Dylan, a Klezmatics tape, an Edith Piaf tape, Why I Sing the Blues- BB King, Wonder Boys soundtrack, Elvis Presley's greatest hits.

Q: If you could put Spanish Prisoners on the bill with any band from history for one show only, who would it be and why?
A: The Smiths in '86 right after The Queen is Dead [buy] came out. Honestly, just because they were a band I never got to see perform and I would love to experience Moz's antics first-hand.

Q: If you could put Spanish Prisoners on the bill with any current band for one show only, who would it be and why?
A: My friends Southeast Engine. I enjoy playing shows with friends and these guys are my buddies who go back a ways. My first experience touring was in their van, along for the ride.

Q: How did Spanish Prisoners come together?
A: Much like the song Come Together by Spiritualized (not The Beatles). Take that as you will.

Q: Could you talk a little bit about how/where the album, Songs to Forget [stream] was recorded and are you ultimately pleased with the outcome?
A: I recorded the album before the other guys were in the band with me. Sort of the typical home-recording thing. I did most of it by myself using really meager tools in the basement of my parents' house back in Columbus, Ohio after long days of teaching preschool. I believe I had two microphones and one preamp. It was a learning experience as well, because it was my first real shot at recording. I also had a lot of friends come in and lay down parts. A few songs were recorded with help. Mantequilla was done over lazy Saturday afternoons with my friend Eric Metronome, who was a big inspiration to me before I began playing shows. Other songs had different stories. Ballad of an Unfolding was done with Jack McKeever in the Lower East Side, using the same piano Rufus Wainwright recorded on. And so it goes. I like how it came out, sort of mid-fi, varying textures and instruments. I can't really listen to it anymore though.

Q: The Internet: Music's salvation or downfall?
A: I think, like anything, it's both positive and negative. It helps spread the word but also has shortened attention spans drastically. I think the internet as a personal/ social tool has had really negative effects on people.

Q: New York is producing a very eclectic mix of bands at the moment and Spanish Prisoners are right up in the mix. What's your opinion of the music coming out of New York right now and where do you think Spanish Prisoners fits in?
A: I love the music coming out of New York --- seems like there has been a lot of creativity flowing. I don't know at all where we fit in (or if we do at all. we're a pretty new band in that respect).

Q: What's in the future for Spanish Prisoners? New recordings? Tour plans? Side projects?
A: We're releasing Songs to Forget, the first Spanish Prisoners record on cd and vinyl in late March/ early April on Exit Stencil Recordings. Then just planning on playing as many shows and touring as much as possible. SXSW, if it's in the cards. Maybe a 7 inch with this new lineup as well.
